Objectives
At the heart of PROTEUS is the world’s first industrial-scale biorefinery, transforming Europe’s abundant brown macroalgae resources, particularly L. hyperborea, through formaldehyde-free harvesting and extraction techniques. By pioneering eco-friendly methods, the project aims to unlock the full potential of this natural resource, creating greener alternatives for everyday products in food, animal feed, personal care, industrial products. This cutting-edge biorefinery supports sustainable development and advances the circular bioeconomy.
Project Objectives
Develop Europe’s first fully integrated industrial biorefinery for brown macroalgae in Norway.
Increase industrial brown seaweed biomass utilisation from 15% to 100% by formaldehyde-free value chains and biorefining processes.
Establish a sustainable supply chain by optimising low impact harvesting operations.
Implement biorefining processes for bio-based products and solutions within SSbD framework.
Develop business models for scale-up and replication of harvesting and industrial biorefining.
Promote sustainable marine resource use.
Support the circular economy and resource efficiency.
Contribute to reducing environmental impact in industrial practices.
Benefits to Society and the Environment
Improved circularity and resource efficiency, reduced fresh water and energy consumption.
Making available a range of bio-based products as alternatives to petrochemical based products.
Increased social acceptance of bio-based solutions, knowledge transfer and exchange, adhering to open science principles.
Maximise the valorisation of residual biomass, development of market uptake of scalable bio-based solutions for high-value applications, while promoting strategic EU autonomy and resource independence.
